Private Screening - "Our Man In Tehran"

On Wednesday September 18th, the Cinephile Society and Entertainment One are excited to present a private screening of the film "Our Man In Tehran" at The National Club.

Premiering the week before at the 2013 Toronto Film Festival, this film is based on the best selling book of the same title written by Robert Wright. Unlike Hollywood's "Argo", this movie reveals new information about the true story of Canadian Ambassador Ken Taylor and the CIA, the secret dealings between the US and Canadian governments to rescue six fugitive American diplomats, and the covert planning of the military rescue “Operation Eagle Claw” during the Iranian Hostage Crisis of 1979.

Co-directors Drew Taylor and Larry Weinstien will be at our exclusive National Club screening of "Our Man In Tehran" to participate in a Q&A after the film!

Space is limited, so please call the Club to book your seat soon.

What's Behind The Secret Door?

National Club members will know what's behind this "secret" door.

If you haven't seen it, this unmarked door is in a corner of the concourse level of Scotia Plaza. It leads into The National Club from The PATH complex of underground tunnels and walkways under Toronto's financial district.

The tunnel was built and the door installed when Scotia Plaza was completed in 1988. Since then National Club members have been able to sneak in (or out) without having to worry about the weather outside.

New Members Lunch

We had a lovely New Members Lunch yesterday at The National Club for six new members, including two Consuls General and the winner of our annual MBA essay-writing competition.

I always enjoy new member lunches. I find showing new members around our Club and talking about its many benefits also serves to remind me of what special a place The National Club is.

For inquiries or if members would like to refer a new person for membership, please contact our Membership Director Nancy Sinclair at nancy@thenationalclub.com and she will do the rest.

Best regards,

Stephen

Beauty and the Beast Filming

If you are in the National Club today or tomorrow, you'll notice our Main Dining Room has been taken over for a film shoot. The new TV series "Beauty and the Beast" starring Kristin Kreuk and Jay Ryan will be shooting in our heritage building this week, but don't worry - members are well accommodated in the rest of the Club.

Who knows? Maybe you'll be "discovered" if you drop by...

Rooftop Patio Progress

Dear Fellow National Club Members,

Last week I ventured onto our rooftop construction site for a look at the progress. Construction is moving fast and the deck sub-floor is now installed.  With the rapid progress I thought I'd share a look before it gets covered up with the wood flooring.

Here is where the elevator will go directly up into the year-round rooftop pavillion.

We'll keep you posted.

Best regards,

Stephen

The National Club's Book Club

The National Club's very active and popular Book Club has its next meeting on Tuesday, August 13th to talk about this month's selection: "The Condition" by Jennifer Haigh.

There will be an introductory presentation by our own Dr. Jack Muskat, to be followed by our usual fascinating discussion and sharing of ideas and feelings about the book.

All National Club members are welcome and if you intend to be there for a lively discussion and refreshments, please contact The Club or Book Club chair Diane Agatston.

Cocktail hour!

Sometimes a cocktail is a work of art.

At lunch yesterday I had a refreshing and fortifying vodka Gimlet in the lounge expertly shaken by Willy. It was so good looking it was almost a shame to drink it.

Nice to know cocktail culture is still alive and well at The National Club and our expert mixologists are standing by if you want to stray from the usual glass of wine or martini.

Cheers!
